Ice Town

Ice+Town

The man behind Brentwood On Ice is Tom Gregory and  there is more behind him and the ice rink. Starting things off Tom Gregory says” My family has been around in Brentwood since 1926.” Gregory added “I always wanted to open an ice rink in Brentwood.”

‘When one opened at the streets of Brentwood I put my dreams on hold for a while” this then not having his ice rink up until now. So Tom waited and the ice rink did not come back. Then things changed Tom goes on and says” With having migraine that I was was not thinking i was going to survive I thought about getting things off my bucket list and the ice rink was one of them.”

“This has been a dream of mine doing this ice rink.” With Tom being a part of the Board of Directors for Brentwood tom says ”Downtown Brentwood could use and Holiday traffic from this type of event.” Tom goes on to say on how he is prepared” I have purchased everything I can for this project, and plan on it being part of Downtown Brentwood’s Holiday experience forever.”

What Tom sees as a potential negative is “It may be the worst Business investment I have ever made, being I expect it to take 5 to 6 years before it even starts to pay for the equipment I have had to purchase.” Even with the negative tom still says “But life is too short to not go out on a limb for a dream” and stays with his dream. With a fun fact about the name Tom explains the name “The name of the Rink comes from me wanting the City of Brentwood to benefit from the Enjoyment and additional customers I hope it brings to the downtown businesses.”

With a little about the competition Tom goes on to say “competition there is supposed to be another rink at the Streets of Brentwood this year and it has taken some of the shine away from my project, but I have a three year lease and I believe they only have a one year and may not get another lease next year.” With info about the rink “My project was given a grant from the City of Brentwood for $28,700 and I have the support of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, The Downtown Business Coalition and many of the local business’s.”

Cade Ignatov A long time Brentwood resident has to say “I have only been to the ice rink once but it was fun.”  A student named Molly Smith at Heritage High School says “It was a long time ago that I went to the ice rinks It was fun and I’d love for the ice rink to come back.” Maddie Levake A student at Liberty goes to say”It was fun It would be cool to see an ice rink in brentwood again”

There are difficulties and Tom goes to say “The hardest part of running an Ice Rink is the overhead. Even if you forget the $250,000 upfront costs the recurring costs each year are substantial. The estimated PG&E bill for a Ice rink this size is $20,000 for the 7 weeks it will run.” Though Tom says this to show the best “As far as running the Rink it will be during the Holiday season and who doesn’t have a little more kindness in their heart that time of year.”

The positives Tom says outweigh the negatives  “With the help the City of Brentwood and local Businesses have been providing my long term goal is to have the ice rink in the City Park on a platform that allows it to meander through the park, as if you were skating through the woods. That way Brentwood has something very few cities have and it could be located there forever.”
