Giving Back One Can At a Time

When Halloween season rolls around, many kids are excited to dress up, get candy, or go to some major party. One event that not everyone knows about is the Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat fundraiser on the 28th of October that the theatre club puts on every year to give back to the community.

Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat is a fundraiser where kids go door to door, dressed up in costumes, asking if people can donate non-perishable food to the Shepherd’s Gate Women’s Shelter. Zachary Welker (12) is the Vice President of the Rising Stars Club and sole organizer of the event.

“Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat is an International Thespian Society event that our troupe takes part of. We go door to door asking for donations of nonperishable foods ‘trick or treating’. We donate all what we collect to Shepard’s Gate,” said Welker.

One club member who is excited to participate again this year is Sandy Cook (11) who had a lot of fun last year, so she is doing it again.

“It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. I was kinda anxious about knocking on doors, but everyone was really nice about it and it felt awesome whenever they’d give up whole bags of stuff to donate,” said Cook.

Jackie Duran (12) helped plan the event last year, but loves what the theatre club gets to do to help the community and prove others wrong.

“I love doing this event. Theatre kids are stereotyped to be self absorbed, so it’s a really nice opportunity to do something for the community, and I really love doing fun events like this,” explained Duran.

This is not just a theatre event. Every year they try to get other clubs, classes, and school to participate too. They want to get as many people as possible to get involved, so they have a bigger chance of getting more donations.

“This year we reached out to other clubs/classes, schools on campus, such as JROTC, band, and Liberty to join us,” said Duran.

No matter what’s going on, there’s always a good reason to donate and help out the community in any way possible. So, in the future you should come out and help collect and if they come to your door, don’t be afraid to open up.
