Fires Sweep Through Northern California
In early October of 2017, several wildfires swept through Northern California, leaving behind a path of destruction and turmoil.
For the counties of Napa, Sonoma, Yuba, Butte, Lake, Mendocino, Nevada, and Orange, the estimated 10,000 fires swept away hundreds of acres, including wineries and homes.
The impact of these events had a tremendous effect on the citizens, as well as the firefighters all throughout the areas, resulting in at least 42 casualties and forcing over 92,000 people to evacuate their homes.
Cindy Hurley, a resident of Sonoma, received the first advisory evacuation notice on October 12th 2017 due to the severity of the fires.
“My first thought was ‘what to I want to bring with me’, or ‘what will I be most upset about leaving’”, said Hurley,
This first evacuation however was only the beginning, after evacuating overnight to a friends house, Cindy was then awoken during the night of October 14th, as a firefighter announced over a loudspeaker a mandatory evacuation accompanied by sirens,
“My first thought during the second evacuation was to hurry and wake up the kids and get somewhere safe!” Hurley added.
Although the devastation was incredibly alarming, both houses the Hurley’s evacuated from are still standing only a couple miles from the path of the fires.
