During the homecoming week of September 18th, students from each grade were preparing for
the class competition of who wins the best float and best decorated SLC based on the genre and
movie chosen by the class officers and students from ASB in each grade. Students were eager to
win the best float and SLC and because of that excitement, everyone gave their all in creativity
and stuck to their class movie theme. Everyone’s main purpose for helping was to be involved in
potentially winning the class competition.
Each grade level had a different genre and movie. Freshman had the genre western with the
movie Toy Story. Sophomores had the genre horror with the movie It. The Juniors had the genre
adventure with the movie of Pirates of the Carribean. The Senior class had the genre of sci-fi
with the movie Jurassic Park.
“I really liked it because I enjoy helping out and those two events allow me to be creative,”
said Mia Garcia (12).
“Float building was really fun because it brought together the senior class and I thought it was
really fun because we played music and stuff like that,” said Karyssa Lozano (12).
Even one of the senior class advisors was confident and anticipated the win because of the
support she had behind her in the entire process.
“I am really excited because I feel like we are more ahead than we have ever been. I think our
team and our officers have done such an excellent job every year. We are even more driven to
win the float building and SLC because we lost the competition last year and now, we have more
of a vengeance and motivation to win,” said Ms. Klinger.
While the senior class theme of sci-fi and the movie Jurassic Park had many mixed reviews
amongst seniors, the people involved in the decision making developed an appreciation for the
theme because of the story and context it carried along with making that choice.
“I like our theme. It is creative and out of the box. First, we had to think of what genre we
wanted to do, and seniors got to pick first so with a lot of critical thinking we chose sci-fi.” said
Garcia.
“We don’t want to just convey the theme, we really want to convey not only the spirit of
patriots but also winning against James Logan,” said Klinger.
“Quite literally, I was not that much of a fan. I am a fan of Jurassic Park but sci-fi? I would
think the obvious choice would be Star Wars and I would have had a lot more fun decorating
with that but, it is up to class office,” said Lozano.
The process of float building and decorating was proven to be an overall fun process for the
senior class. The teamwork, dedication, and bonding created a stunning float that won the class
competition. The commitment was truly shown in the final product of the float and SLC and that
is why seniors deserved the win.
