On Friday the 22nd Heritage High School’s Varsity Football team played their Homecoming game
against James Logan High School. Heritage lost the game 21-27 during the final quarter, but will use this
game as a learning opportunity as they approach their first league game against Antioch High School.
Heritage now has achieved 2 wins and 3 losses this season.
The game started off in Heritage’s favor as the first kickoff was returned for a touchdown by captain
Brooks Davis (12). Then Heritage kicked for an extra point and achieved it, leading the game 7-0. During
the second quarter, Niko Zovick (12) intercepted a pass. This caused Jordan Carnard (11) to catch
Heritage’s second touchdown of the night that was followed by a perfect kick for an extra point. Later,
Gabriel Gonzeles Kidd (12) intercepted the ball allowing the last touchdown to be made by Mekhi
Adanandus (11), followed by another great kick.
Even though the team fell short, they felt that the game was valuable to the progression of their
teamwork skills and led them to become more closely bonded as a team.
“This team is very important to me. The boys have taught me how hard work and commitment can pay
off. Even though we did not win this game, it helped us get better. Right now, our defensive line is
working on tackling,” said Team Captain Cody Wong (12).
Wong is proud to be a captain of this team and feels they can only get better from here. Along with
Wong, Cole Wetherbee (11) also felt great optimism after this game.
“It was definitely a difficult loss for our team, but I have faith that with hard work the team can bounce
back and win the rest of our games. With so many talented young players, I have hope for our team’s
future,” said Wetherbee.
Heritage’s head Coach, Mr. Fogelstrom, agrees with Wong’s statement about the defensive line. He
also feels the team has a lot of work to put in, but will use this game as a constructive way to demolish
weaknesses.
“The team played with a lot of energy and gave it their all. For a young team to play against a
physically larger team like James Logan and hold a winning score for 99 percent of the game is a positive
result of the amount of effort they had to make on the field. We made a lot of mistakes at the end of the
game, but this was a result of the number of injuries that occurred and changes to our original
strategies. As a team we will learn from these mistakes and emerge confident incase this ever happens
again,” said Fogelstrom.
Heritage’s team will learn from their mistakes and emerge triumphant. All great teams have setbacks,
and this is just one of many that will lead to greatness.
