The exciting Senior Trip to Wake Island occurred on August 31st near Sacramento, California.
Many seniors anticipated attending the trip to have fun swimming at a synthetic beach and
enjoying a hot day with their peers outside of a school environment. One of the main reasons
seniors attended was due to past seniors at Wake Island and not wanting to miss any of the senior
events.
“I think that during my senior year I just really want to get into all the activities. I don’t want to
miss out on anything because I have a fear of missing out. Also, it looked like a lot of fun,” said
Jeremiah Flores (12).
While some of Flores’ friends were not going on the trip, that was not going to stop him from
missing out. Most students have different opinions on how Wake Island went for them, the trip
seemed to have gone well for most of this year’s seniors. While some saw it as a break from daily
school life, some also saw it as an opportunity to build better connections with their friends.
“I thought it was fun, very relaxing day. We got to have a break in the year from all senior
pressures,” said Mia Garcia (12).
“It was actually a lot of fun and I was able to hang out with friends that I don’t really talk to
very much,” said Flores.
An organizer of the event also received different feedback from students.
“A lot of seniors said they really enjoyed Wake Island. Some people were just sad everything
was in shifts but that was just how Wake Island works,” said Nuhamin Aklilu (12).
The school providing an event for the seniors to enjoy a day off is very appreciated amongst
the class. But with the eventful day came some unexpected issues that occurred in the process of
planning Wake Island.
“An issue that occurred was that we could not have it on the day we originally planned for. At
first, we were looking to have it before break on September 29th to end off the quarter nice, but
Wake Island stopped doing reservations for that time and football players would not have been
able to attend,” said Aklilu.
Aklilu even provided some advice for the future seniors that will plan Wake Island.
“Plan it the summer before senior year so that you have more date options. Also, give the
students more than two weeks to buy tickets so that you do not need a waitlist and give a wider
range of food options,” said Aklilu.
Seniors enjoyed the event because of the change in the environment where you would normally
see the rest of your peers.
“Going with my class was really fun, they were a lot more chill than I thought they would be
because a lot of us knew each other, and it was nice to see people I knew in a different
environment,” said Garcia.
Wake Island forms bonding experiences that can be unforgettable after graduating high school.
The memories can be unforgettable from the thrill of being outside of school routines. Wake
Island was the perfect environment for seniors to let loose and enjoy a day of relaxation and fun.
It allowed students to be stress free for some time and build stronger connections with peers that
they may not have been able to connect with outside of school. As students reflect on Wake
Island, it is safe to say that they will not regret attending and can look back on unforgettable
