Love is in the air. Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th each year, is a time to recognize love and affection between couples, although its significance extends beyond romantic relationships. Valentine’s Day lets us express the spirit of love between everyone, including friendships, family bonds, and self-love. This day offers a unique opportunity to express heartfelt emotions and strengthen connections with those we hold dear.
Traditionally on Valentines Day, couples will express their love by asking their significant other to be their “Valentine.” This means that you have a romantic interest in them and are expressing your affection for them. People ask in different ways but typically through words, gifts, or actions.
“My boyfriend asked me with flowers, candy, and he wrote me a love letter,” said Maya Garcia (12).
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be celebrated in a romantic way though. A valentine can refer to a family member, friend, or even a pet.
“Every Valentine’s Day my family writes each other valentine cards and my mom gets me and my siblings candy and stuffed animals,” said Averi Millward (12).
Many people will also spend Valentine’s Day with self-love. They take the time from this day to just do what they want and appreciate themselves. For example, relaxing or watching a movie, etc.
“I’m going to spend the day watching a romance movie. Also, me and my friends had a Galentine’s day,” said Mia Garcia (12).
In general, Valentine’s Day also serves as a reminder of the significance of emotional expression. Expressing love and appreciation is vital for emotional well-being. Valentine’s Day provides a special occasion to remind those around you how much you love and appreciate them.
“I think Valentines Day helps remind my family how much I really love them. Even though I express love every day, Valentine’s Day just intensifies it,” said Lian Sussmann.
The celebration of Valentine’s Day in schools can include discussions about the history and traditions of the day, allowing students to explore and respect cultural diversity. It’s an opportunity to teach young people that everyone has different ways of expressing love and that all forms of love are valid and important.
Valentine’s Day is much more than a day for romantic gestures, it’s a celebration of love in all its forms. By embracing the spirit of the day, we can help build a sense of community and belonging. This Valentine’s Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate the love that surrounds us.
