Improv Team selects new troupe

The Heritage High School Improv Team consists mostly of upperclassman, so each year the majority of the team leaves. This results in each grades wittiest and quick on their toes students gathering after school in the theater to audition.

“Trying out for the Improv Team is terrifying because you see so many great, hilarious people and you know you have to be one of them to make it,” Devin Stone (11) said.

The team selection process to the Improv Team is a lot different than it would be for trying out for things like football, soccer, or basketball. This year is the first year they have conducted it as a group of about 40 kids playing real games they would play at the shows. Each contender got to participate in two games where they were evaluated considered for a position on the team.

“You have to be very diverse with your jokes you can’t stay on one thing for too long or it gets awkward, also it’s very important to not try to be funny just go get on stage and tell a story and people will start liking it,” Jordon Carrillo (11) said.

Only a select few are gifted enough to be a part of the team and it’s important to have specific characteristics so everything will run smoothly. Some things they were looking for at auditions and call backs were: the ability to carry a story, being able to give and take meaning you’re not trying to upstage anyone but still have a fair amount of time to share your jokes. An automatic no to be on the team would be if you’re making any offensive jokes, if you’re hogging the attention or if you’re making anything not family and kid friendly.

Each year brings completely new personalities to the group so it’s difficult to blend to together and find how to vibe together and be entertaining. Last year’s Improv Team brought so many people to the schools theater that it was standing room only and the group leader Zac Mendoza has been trusted to create a team that can do the same.

“Improv means being in the weirdest family while preforming the scariest way on stage. It’s the best when you’re preforming on stage and the audience is just loving it and you see their reactions and it’s just really the best,” Zac Mendoza (12) said.

The new Improv Team consisting of sophomores, juniors and seniors will steal the stage and have even the grumpiest of people on the floor laughing like little girls at a sleepover.

The new Improv Team consists General Zac Mendoza and members Joron Carillo, Cameron Bonham, Ava Venezia, Andy Holifeild, Amelia Towse, Drew Davis, Caleb Hefner, Charlotte Kinsella, and Chris Wheeler.
