Delta Water Safety
The Delta, located in the backyards of many in Discovery Bay, has been contaminated with dangerous blue-greenish algae.
On August 11, the Contra Costa Health Services sent out a warning to locals and visitors of the area to stay out of the water due to a breakout of algae known as cyanobacteria.
The algae, that appears to bloom out of water, may possibly be hazardous to people and their pets.
According to the CCHS, exposure to the Delta’s water could cause serious skin irritation and also allergic reactions, and even possible death.
There are certain conditions that cause these blue-greenish algae to replenish, such as the warm weather we get out here, and the Delta’s still waters.
Since the release of the cyanobacteria’s outbreak, ‘Danger’ and ‘Caution’ signs have been placed around accessible ways into the water.
According to environmental scientist, Marilyn Underwood, she warns people to stay cautious in getting the water in your mouth. She also warns fishermen to only catch fish located in the ‘Caution’ area because there is a possibility that they are not contaminated.
At the end of the day the CCHS is working on a community way to raise caution and awareness over the algae breakout to people all over the community.
