In July 2023, “Barbie” was released nationally and broke numerous records by being the
highest-grossing film of 2023. People of all ages adore this movie because of its positive
message and nostalgia. The leading actress, Margot Robbie, embodied such vulnerable emotions
to portray Barbie. She and the producer of the most successful film itself, Greta Gerwig, however
were not nominated for Oscars’ Best Actress or Best Producer.
While many critics are shocked, the most disappointing thing about this situation is that Ryan
Gosling, who plays Ken, got nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Although he well deserves it,
it’s sad to see the women who are responsible for the movie itself were not recognized for their
remarkable achievements.
“And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s
for portraying a plastic doll named Ken. But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no
Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this
history-making, globally-celebrated film,” said Ryan Gosling.
The film represents a strong theme throughout the whole film about embracing femininity and
womanhood since it is so overlooked by misogyny in our society. Real life instances like this
convey the frustration women feel when no matter how successful their product is, they
somehow always are left unnoticed.
However, actress Margot Robbie has responded to this whole debacle and stated that she is not
sad about being overlooked for the nomination. She is rather blessed for the experience Barbie
has brought her. She is rather upset though that the well deserved Greta was not nominated for
Best Producer.
